I found myself once again tasked to create, plan and complete a self-directed project for the whole semester (a shorter one this time). At first, I struggled to decide whether I wanted to take my Blackpink project further or to start a new one.
After a week of contemplation, I came across a video that would steer this whole project. And that video was the McDonalds UK advert directed by Edgar Wright. I was entertained by his filming style as I’ve enjoyed his movies in the past. What piqued my interest especially was that he managed to create an incredible commercial using the distinct mixture of his style of filming and music choice, all without showing a single image of the product. Relying only on subtle hints on colour and a reimagined way of symbolizing the McDonalds arches, Edgar Wright delivered a fresh, new take on commercials.
Inspired by this advert, I decided to combine two things that I enjoy: video production & Pokémon GO.
I wanted the protagonist, a modern day Ash Ketchum, to be enveloped by a busy and loud environment on top of the video having a dull and almost lonely feeling. Only illuminated by yellow light at certain vtimes and areas, I wanted yellow light to be a main focal point in the video. As for the plot of the video itself, I knew it would be beneficial for me to film the project at my school: Humber College. This way I can take advantage of the filming equipment available to students but also utilize my friends/classmates for the shoot. It was also a great way to use a school day to film since the talent and myself will already be there and won’t need to travel for it.
Despite hurdles along the way, such as equipment and health problems, this project helped me validate to myself that I am multi-faceted and that I can and do wear many hats. I am resourceful and resilient, despite any shortcomings. I learned that I can adapt to situations well and I work well under pressure. Check out the social media posts and full video below!
